Basis: Employees drawing gross wages up to ₹21,000/month (₹25,000/month for persons with disability) are covered under the ESI scheme. Employee contribution is 0.75% of gross wages; employer contribution is 3.25% of gross wages (rates effective since July 2019, carried forward under the Code on Social Security, 2020). Employees drawing wages above the applicable ceiling are not covered and no ESI contribution is payable. An employee whose average daily wage does not exceed ₹176 is exempt from the employee’s share under rule 52, while the employer’s 3.25% remains payable in full. Contributions are rounded up to the next rupee.
